On Wednesday evening Newcastle United Under-19s lost 2-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
Newcastle, although beaten by the better side, wasted enough chances to have won their penultimate match of the season.
James Tevendale's 26th minute strike from 20 yards following a free kick gave Wednesday a half time lead but Peter Wright (twice) and Bradley Orr both missed greater chances for Newcastle.
Early in the second half Brian Kerr and Johnny Mann wasted worthy openings before Jim Shaw doubled the Wednesday lead, firing low past John Brain on 59 minutes following a 50 yard run by the powerful Danny Wood.
Wednesday's more composed football deserved the reward but in a late Newcastle rally Mark Boyd, Orr and Mann all fired wide, while Wright shot weakly at goal keeper Danny Trueman before skipper Gary Caldwell headed a pinpoint cross from Boyd the wrong side of the left post from just eight yards.
Newcastle: Brain, Brennan, Dunn, Hogg, Caldwell, Orr, Kerr, Boyd, Mann, Cowie (Dixon 59), Wright. Subs not used: Rayner, Kendrick and Pringle.
