A UNIVERSITY'S international reputation has seen it attract a record number of overseas applicants.

More than 2,000 students from all over the world have applied to study at Sunderland University this year - more than double last year's figure.

The estimated 750 who will be successful will bring in nearly £4m to the local economy.

Neil Maynard, director of the university's Centre for International Education, said: "International students bring a cultural diversity to the university and the city. Our international students enjoy their time here and they take back the message that Sunderland is a good place to live and study."

He said surveys showed the reasons international students applied to Sunderland ranged from the university's academic track-record to the reputation of the city's football club.

Pakistan tops the table for overseas students, followed by China, with strong demand for places from Norway, Malaysia, India, Hong Kong, and Cyprus.
