PUPILS will take their first driving lessons next week without leaving the school grounds.
Teenagers from St John's RC Comprehensive, Bishop Auckland, are being given practical driving experience with specially-trained instructors.
The driving course is part of driving school BSM's Ignition programme, designed to teach road safety awareness and perception skills to 15 to 17-year-olds.
Students, working in teams of three, complete tasks such as practising steering while wearing vision-restricting goggles, and judging width and distances by manoeuvring a car between cones.
Ignition manager Andy Brown said: "The off-road sessions are popular with students and they're learning valuable lessons while having fun."
