POLICE hunting two women after they snatched a pensioner's bag, have arrested a female in connection with the incident.
The elderly woman was walking down Murray Street in Hartlepool just before 3pm on Tuesday when the incident happened.
A 23-year-old, who was arrested by the newly-formed Street Crime Unit in Hartlepool, has been questioned regarding the theft and given police bail pending further inquiries and an identity parade.
Detective Inspector Lynne Richardson who heads the unit said: "There has been a number of attacks on vulnerable people in the town recently, and the street crime unit will be out and about actively looking for any cowardly criminals who prey on the elderly.
"We will leave no stone unturned in bringing them to justice."
The four-strong squad is based within the CID department at Hartlepool with the primary aim of targeting house burglaries, robbery and car crime.
Finance for the unit came through the Government's Crime Fighting Fund and similar squads have been set up in Middlesbrough, Stockton and Langbaurgh districts.
