AN initiative to cut burglary in Stockton has been praised by the Government.
The initiative, which involved two separate schemes, received more than £100,000 of Government funding and was run by the Safer Stockton Partnership.
It was one of a series of initiatives nationwide, which has helped the Government to hit an ambitious target of protecting two million homes in England and Wales from burglars.
The Stockton projects covered central Stockton and the Portrack and Swainby Road area, where the rate of burglary in 1997 and 1998 was significantly higher than the average for Stockton as a whole.
In the target areas there has been a reduction in dwelling burglary of 17 per cent.
The projects included the establishment of four crime prevention panels in schools and the supply of 2,000 property marking kits to homes
