PLANNED flood defences could double up as a new attractions for walkers and cyclists under a scheme now being discussed.
Proposals are being submitted for defences at Malton and Norton, which will consist of embankments and flood walls.
Leisure plans to tie in with the scheme are under discussion.
"Money to build walls and embankments is already being provided by the Environment Agency," said Councillor Stephen Shaw, of the liaison group set up in the wake of last year's flooding.
"Some of these embankments would make excellent cycle paths or a possible walk along the river.
"As this cash is going to be provided anyway to protect homes, it could also be used to match-fund any projects to develop the embankments as cycle and walking tracks.
"There would be an added attraction for visitors to the town, and it would also enhance the area for residents."
Any project would need the approval of Ryedale District Council. English Nature would also be consulted because of interests over protected wildlife.
The cost of the flood defences around Malton and Norton is estimated to be about £4m.
Another flood defence project at nearby Pickering will cost a further £1.3m.
The Environment Agency is now looking into possible times and venues for a public meeting about the defences. It will probably be held in the middle of May.
