PARALYMPIC golden girl Tanni Grey-Thompson triumphed again when she finished first in the London Marathon wheelchair race yesterday.
Tanni, from Redcar, Teesside, won the women's race after completing the 26 mile circuit in 2hrs 13mins 55 secs. It is the fifth London Marathon she has won in a row.
The latest win follows her record-breaking four gold medals at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics when she beat the world's best at 100, 200, 400 and 800 metres.
She was awarded an OBE and MBE, is a member of the UK Sports Council and vice-president of the Women's Sports Foundation.
A Flora London Mar-athon spokeswoman said: "Tanni did very well and it is a great achievement to finish the race at all, never mind win it five times in a row. We would like to congratulate her on her success."
The men's wheelchair race was won by Frenchman Denis Lemeunier who finished in 1:42:37. He has never won the race before and only just managed to hold off last year's men's winner, Kevin Papworth, who finished in 1:44:54.
More than 30,000 runners took to the streets for the event.
At the head of the field there was an African double with Abdelkader El Mouaziz, from Morocco, sprinting to victory in the men's race in 2:7:9 and Derartu Tulu, from Ethiopia, winning the women's event in 2:23:55.
