BUSINESSES are being urged to make Durham a blaze of colour this summer and help its chances of competition success.
The city has twice won awards in the Britain in Bloom competition and was chosen last year to host the first national finals ceremony of the new millennium.
Colourful tubs of plants and hanging baskets in and around the city centre have also helped Durham scoop several awards in the Northumbria in Bloom competition over the years.
Now, Durham City Council is urging shops, pubs, offices and other firms to play their part in the effort and have baskets outside their premises.
A spokesman for the council said: "The floral attractiveness of the city is much admired by our many visitors from home and abroad, as well as the people who live and work here.
"In the past many businesses have sponsored hanging baskets outside their premises and this has greatly improved the overall street environment."
Baskets, which are partly sponsored by the council, cost £36 each, and brackets can be fitted for a further £25 each.
Baskets will be displayed from June to September, and will be watered three times a week and maintained by council workmen.
For further details about the scheme call the council's environment and leisure division on 0191-301 8693. Applications for a basket must be submitted by Friday, May 25.
