RESIDENTS braved the rain yesterday as they got to work on a major litter pick of their town centre.
The litter pick was carried out by Stockton's Town Centre Residents Association, who were helping to launch the £25 fixed penalty notice for anyone who drops litter.
The Just Bin It campaign by the Tidy Britain Group was the perfect platform for Stockton Borough Council to launch the first initiative of their Care For Your Area Best Value Review.
A number of enforcement officers from the council will also be in the area throughout the week to ensure the message gets home to people in the town.
Councillor Geoff Field Cabinet member for the environment said: "We want people to understand that they should dispose of their litter responsibly.
"We are doing what the residents want by taking this action.
"We want people to be proud of the town and we know enforcement and education is the key.
"We will do whatever it takes to make people realise that litter is totally unacceptable. It is the minority who are offending the majority."
