ANTIQUES Roadshow expert, Eric Knowles, was in North Yorkshire yesterday, showing fellow enthusiasts around a town famous for one of the most remarkable finds of the past century.
The Middleham Jewel, a 500-year-old gold pendant set with a saphire, was unearthed in a field not far from the market town's castle - but the visitors who arrived yesterday with the BBC presenter were not armed with metal detectors.
Most were enjoying a holiday organised by travel company Activity Superstore - the first arranged in the North after similar breaks in London prompted demand for others elsewhere.
It is hoped the tour, which also takes in Tennants auction rooms in Leyburn, which holds its spring catalogue sale this weekend, will help boost the local tourist trade, hard hit by the foot-and-mouth crisis. Other visits accompanied by experts are planned in the summer.
