A TAXI driver has criticised his local council after being told he cannot relicence his two cabs until the roof signs are changed.
George Jenkinson says it could cost up to £75 each to change the signs because they do not conform with council policy.
Darlington Borough Council says all Hackney carriage roof signs must have only the word "taxi" in black lettering on a white background.
One of Mr Jenkinson's cabs contains the word "Darlington" on its sign. The other is a continental-style roof sign in black and yellow.
Mr Jenkinson said: "It is ridiculous, especially having to remove the word Darlington, because this helps identify us.
"The council would not go down the high street and tell Woolworths to remove their sign and put up 'shop' instead."
Barry Pearson, Darlington council's licensing manager, said taxis in the town had previously had a variation of roof signs and the decision to have a standard appearance was taken last year.
Mr Jenkinson had added the word Darlington deliberately, despite knowing the requirement, he said.
Mr Pearson said: "It would be easy for him to comply where at least one of the signs is concerned."
