QUESTIONNAIRES on the destiny of local government in Richmondshire have started dropping through thousands of letterboxes across the district.
New legislation means the council has to consider one of the most radical overhauls in the decision-making process for a quarter of a century.
But, before it commits to a course of action, 5,000 households have been asked for their input on four options - one of which will be implemented by April next year.
Instead of the current committee system, the council can consider appointing a council leader and cabinet; a mayor and a cabinet; a mayor and a council manager or a revamped committee system.
Consultation documents outline how each works.
Interested parties can examine the proposals at local libraries and council offices, including the community offices in Hawes and Leyburn. Details are also on the council website at www.richmondshire.gov.org
"There is no doubt that whichever option is chosen will mean a fundamental change to the way the council works and it is therefore vital that people we consult think carefully about what they think would best suit an area such as Richmondshire," said council leader, CouncillorJohn Blackie.
The results of the consultation exercise will be presented to the full council in June.
