SPACE, the band behind the hit song Female of the Species, will be among the acts at a music festival next month.

Following the success of last year's BBC Music Live event, Middlesbrough Borough Council is launching an annual music festival every Spring Bank Holiday.

The event, to be held in the town centre, will feature new and established musicians, and is free.

Space will top the bill on the main stage, and there will be another four stages where bands including Lowgold, Wildcats of Kilkenny, Snowboy and local groups Transfusion and Ghetto Talent will perform.

Promoter Graham Ramsay said: "There are some great young bands taking part - I'm absolutely convinced that we have the next Travis or Coldplay."

In the run up to the main festival, on Bank Holiday Monday, May 28, there will be a fringe event in and around Middlesbrough Theatre, on May 27. Acts will include folk star Vin Garbutt, and the Barracudas.

Last year's festival, involving about 50 bands, attracted more than 25,000 spectators.
