THE western approach to Richmond boasts an unusual landmark.
The pre-war road sign, welcoming visitors to the community, was looking the worse for wear earlier this year as no one seemed to know who was responsible for repairs.
The town council and Richmond Civic Society agreed something had to be done, and the former stumped up the cash while the society found the artisans with the skills for the job.
William Smith and Sons, of Barnard Castle, which made the original sign, made up the alloy letters, which are no longer manufactured.
Glass reflectors were made specially by Wearside Glass Sculptures, at the glass heritage centre in Sunderland.
The Mayor, Councillor John Harris, and the civic society chairman, Bev Joicey unveiled the sign this week.
