Great Ayton defeated Staithes 3-1 in the league cup final played under the Whitby lights. Ayton went ahead after 20 minutes when David Grainge supplied the perfect cross for Richard Hore to side-foot home. The lead was doubled five minutes later when Chris Ripley's volley beat Matthew Sanderson, hit the crossbar and rebounded in off the keeper. Staithes responded well and Mark Whittaker fired over following a corner and Smith twice went close after wriggling through the Ayton defence. Ayton were dangerous on the break with Col Murray and Hore working the ball well without getting a clean shooting chance on the Staithes goal. Staithes reduced the arrears when Simon Best shot and Lee Toogood could only parry the ball into James Wilson's path and he forced the ball home. Ayton responded well and forced Staithes back and when they were awarded a needless free-kick 25 yards out and when Ross Milburn's powerful kick came back off the crossbar Stephen Pennock was first to react and knock the ball home. Staithes could not find a way past the well-organised Ayton defence in which Graham Hall and Phil Makin were outstanding. Richard Hore was man of the match. Goldsborough booked their place in the Whitby Benevolent Trophy final against Redcar Mackinlay Park following a 4-1 victory over Huntsman. Oliver Bagnell opened the scoring for Goldsborough with Russell Ingram adding a second before John Kirkwood pulled a goal back. However, further goals from before Neill Duell and Ingram, sealed the win. In the League Staithes came from behind to defeat an organised and determined Grosmont side 3-1. Grosmont took the lead when a shot from Gareth Moore was deflected into the path of Victor Hicks who made no mistake from 12 yards. Grosmont could have extended their lead but Moore headed over after good work from Hicks and Trevor Leech shot straight at keeper Matthew Sanderson when a good passing move left him in the clear. From the resultant corner, James Wilson headed an equaliser for Staithes. Staithes went ahead when Gibson's was returned to him and from his second attempt Wilson again headed home. Into injury time Staithes got their third goal, and rich reward for Lee Gibson who shot home from the edge of the area past an unsighted Tommy Peirson. Davy Wilson netted three times, man of the match Mally Whitehead grabbed two goals and Craig Winter one. Mark Iseton scored Anchor's consolation. Boosbeck suffered a setback in the championship race as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against a defensively well organised Lealholm side. Hinderwell switched their game with Brotton to Skelton and nearly got their first points of the season, Brotton winning 2-1. Kev Brown put Brotton in front before Hinderwell's Khahil Khawaja converted a penalty. However, Brotton were not be denied and won the game when they were awarded a penalty which was scored by Stuart Davies.
