Sponsors AM-AM

The club has been extremely fortunate over the years to have firms either sponsoring completely or supporting advertisers on the various tees and to thank these firms the club decided to entertain sponsors to an afternoon of golf and a meal. The competition format was a Stableford AM-AM with three scores to count.

Claret jugs

The major early season 36-holes competition, played over two days, attracted a strong field of men, ladies and juniors in spite of the weather. Richard Lee won both the gross and nett men's competition, but as club rules only permit the winner to take one prize, he took the gross prize. Prizes were awarded not only for the 36-hole gross and nett competition, but were also given for the best cards on Sunday and Monday.

Red Cross Cup No 1

Bad weather meant that some players were unable to complete their rounds at this early time of the season, but nevertheless, steady scoring was the order of the day with 36 points by John Shaw and John Forrester with position decided on countback, 35 points, Alistair Ritchie and Ian Waddelow, again position decided on countback.

Chris Nattrass will not be buying any golf balls for some time for after achieving the only two on the night, collecting 24 balls.

Rabbits dinner

A pre-season get-together for the Rabbits and their partners took place on Saturday with an Easter theme being predominant. All ladies received a small Easter gift to celebrate the occasion.

An excellent dinner was followed by a speech from this year's Rabbits captain Peter Kirby who thanked David Armstrong, his predecessor, for all his help.

He was looking forward to the season to come and hoped all Rabbits would support the Open Day in May.

Romanby

THE annual men's competition for the Romanby Iron and Novice Cup was played on Sunday 22. The first and second in Division Two are junior members of the Romanby club.

Results - Division One: 1 Sean Kendrew 36 points; 2 Geoff Yarrow 36; 3 Martin Scaife 34; Division Two: 1 Bryan Wood (Jnr) 42; 2 Antony Robinson (Jnr) 40; 3 John Lowther 40. Novice Cup winner, Colin Pratt 34 points.

Harrogate Society of Captains

The annual meeting of the society was held at Oakdale with Gordon Wray in the chair. Election of officers: Captain of captains, Roger Knight (Thirsk and Northallerton); vice-captain Alan Sunman (Pannal); treasurer Keith Helsby (Knaresborough).

Roger Knight in his acceptance speech said how much he was looking forward to his year and hoped he would receive support from all past captains.

Alan Isbister spoke on behalf of past captains in praise of Gordon Wray for the way he had represented the society during his year and in his reply Gordon spoke of his enjoyment of his year and thanked Alan Sunman for all his help and for all his hard work in arranging the matches and also for the support he had received from his fellow captains.
