A BRILLIANT goal from Republic of ireland international Kevin Kilbane revived Sunderland's hopes of qualifying for Europe on their last visit to The Dell before Southamtpon move to a new ground.
The Wearsiders, who had only won one of their previous 12 games, had to thank Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen for two crucial first half saves from Jo Tessem and Marian Pahars.
Southampton, without a win since the departure of manager Glenn Hoddle last month, had also had what appeared a good goal from striker James Beattie disallowed for offside.
Sunderland were better after the break, however, and when Gavin McCann whipped in a quick freekick in the 55th minute Kilbane broke the deadlock with a spectacular overhead kick.
But Sunderland then had to thank French fullback Patrice Carteron for clearing off the line from Beattie in the 73rd minute.
