AN athlete is gearing up to take part in the World and European triathlon championships.
Dave Gamble, 34, from Croft, near Darlington, has been chosen to represent Great Britain in the rapidly-growing sport, which involves swimming, cycling and running.
In June, he will be heading to Karlovy in the Czech Republic to compete in the European championships in the 30 to 35 age category. Then in July he is in Edmonton, Canada, to take part in the world championships.
Mr Gamble, who is originally from Billingham, Teesside, is training for about 14 hours a week, because of the demands of the triathlon. He faces a mile-long swim and 25-mile bike ride, before finishing with a 10km run.
A joiner, his company, Mansell Construction Services North-East, has already offered to meet the costs of his trip to Karlovy, which will cost more than a £1,000.
He said: "I'll be aiming for a top ten finish at the worlds and top three at the Europeans.
"The competition is fierce and it is a big step up from the European championships to the world championships."
Anyone who can provide Mr Gamble with financial help should ring (01325) 721869.
