BISHOP Auckland police and Neighbourhood Watch organisers will be among the first users of a village drop in centre opening this week in West Auckland's former library.
They plan to hold surgeries every Friday, from 2pm to 4pm.
Watch co-ordinator John Raw said the centre would bring huge benefits to West Auckland.
He said: "We see this project, which is right in the centre of the village, as a huge step forward.
"As in other villages, there is a feeling that the police service is not readily accessible and needs to be more high profile.
"It is a big commitment from the constabulary to give to this project.
"It will be an opportunity for local residents to air any concerns and issues they may have.
"Sometimes fear of crime is far higher than actual crime."
