BLOODSPORTS could be on the increase in the North-East and North Yorkshire.

Police wildlife officers and RSPCA inspectors across the country say they are receiving record numbers of tip-offs about dog fights and cock fights.

The fights are particularly popular in the big cities, but there may also be more taking place in the North.

Sergeant Eddie Bell, one of Durham Constabulary's four wildlife liaison officers, said: "Over the last 18 months, we have noticed that there are a number of people keeping fighting birds, which suggests that something could be going on.

"These birds are extremely aggressive and they have no other use than for fighting."

The last prosecution for cockfighting in County Durham took place four years ago.

But both cockfighting and dogfighting are extremely well organised and it is almost impossible for the police and RSPCA officers to obtain information.

Sgt Bell said: "We don't have a really big city centre in this region like London or Birmingham where cockfighting and dogfighting are popular, but I'm sure it's taking place.

"Badger baiting is more common and that is happening all over the region.

"If anyone knows anything about any events that are going on, they should contact their local police station."

Sgt Bell added: "They certainly shouldn't approach any of these people because they could be violent towards any witnesses."
