PERFORMERS from the region are being invited to show off their talents to the people of provincial Romania on a goodwill visit this summer.

County Durham haulier Bill Troup has become an unofficial British ambassador to Romania, having transported hundreds of consignments of aid with the farm machinery his family firm has exported over the last decade.

In mid-July, he is providing some cultural aid for the Romanian people, with a touring visit planned by a group of dancers and Scottish pipers.

Bill, of Trimdon Village, County Durham, wants to hear from any performer who can travel to Romania in mid-July.

The various acts will perform in town squares and market places, and for groups of old people and children. The tour culminates with a performance at the finale of a music festival in the central city of Targu Mures, on Sunday, July 22.

Romanian pianist Anda Anastasescu has organised the festival, which already features the swing band from York's Pocklington School.

Bill said anyone with musical talent was welcome to take part, but must contribute about £260 towards the air fare.

Accommodation is provided at a boarding college, and food and internal travel in Romania are catered for by the hosts.
