FORMER workmates of a man who died after a night out are hoping to find somebody willing to take their clothes off to help raise money for his family.

However, the stripper will not be unclothing in front of a bar full of partying charity fundraisers - they will be running across a football pitch.

Staff at Morrisons, in North Road, Darlington, are hoping the streaker will liven up a charity football match in aid of colleague Paul Simpson, who died earlier this year.

The event will take place at Darlington Football Club's Feethams ground on Wednesday, May 9, and the organisers are also hoping to find a celebrity - clothed or not - to help attract a large crowd.

However, calls around the region's football clubs and other venues have so far drawn blanks in their search for a big name.

Mr Simpson, 34, died on March 12 in Middlesbrough General Hospital, having been found unconscious during the early hours of the previous morning, only yards from his home in Eldon Street, Darlington.

The money raised at the match, which will kick-off at 7pm, will go to Mr Simpson's partner Patricia and two daughters, Lauren and Ashleigh.

"I've tried to get a celebrity on the night, but I haven't been able to get anyone," said organiser Elizabeth Palmer.

"We are looking for a streaker to run across the pitch, as well."

Celebrities and exhibitionists willing to help should contact Ms Palmer on (01325) 257062. The gates open at Feethams at 6pm.

l Alfred Robert Welch, 21, of Harris Street, Darlington, is remanded in custody, charged with Mr Simpson's murder.
