A LONG-SERVING police officer has become the latest member of a regional crime fighting team.

Cleveland officer DC Gordon Howes has taken up a post at the Chester-le-Street base of Crimestoppers.

He will work with police from the Durham, Northumbria and North Yorkshire forces to promote the service on Teesside.

He said: "When people ring they are very apprehensive, thinking we want to know their identity or will try to trace calls. We don't. We make no checks at all. The beauty of the system is everything is anonymous and that means there is so much potential."

With 27 years experience in the force, DC Howes was considered ideal for the job.

"I know the Cleveland area well," he said. "I know straight away where people are talking about, and that's an advantage."
