PIONEERING biomedical research at a North-East university is forging ahead thanks to a £2m grant from a charity named after a home building empire.
Roy Leech, chairman of the Sir William Leech Charity, named after his late uncle, presented a cheque for £500,000 - the second of four instalments - to Professor Peter Bayliss, dean of medicine at Newcastle University.
The money will allow the development of research techniques and provide updated facilities at the medical school. Research at the school aims to improve the treatment of genetic disorders, including some cancers.
Professor Bayliss said: "Our understanding of genetics has improved enormously in the last few years, and work at Newcastle has made major contributions to this knowledge. The funds from the Leech Charity will facilitate expansion of space and staff required to explore the genes that are responsible for a number of human disorders and diseases."
