A FORMER prison officer and town mayor has been awarded a long-service medal for his 25-year career at a young offenders' institution.
Terry Nunn received the Imperial Service Medal at a ceremony in the prison chapel at Deerbolt Young Offenders' Institution, near Barnard Castle.
Mr Nunn, 58, who was an officer support grade until his retirement earlier this year, was presented with the medal by the prison service's North-East area manager, Ray Mitchell.
Mr Nunn has also been heavily involved with Barnard Castle Town Council and has served as mayor of the town twice, ending his most recent term last year.
Principal officer Alan Dobie, who has worked with Mr Nunn at Deerbolt for several years, said: "The Imperial Service Medal is quite a rare honour and it's recognition of service and dedication to work with the prison service.
"Terry has been a fabulous person to work with and he really deserves some recognition for his hard work."
