STOCKTON Borough Council is taking the lead in tackling barking dogs.
A third of noise complaints received by the council concern dogs.
To raise awareness of the problem, council officials were in the town centre yesterday, talking to pet owners.
Environmental Services officers gave advice on ways to reduce unnecessary barking.
Meanwhile, animal welfare officers demonstrated how a special dog collar can be used to help train dogs not to bark unnecessarily.
Steve Smith, environmental control officer, said: "This was an opportunity to raise awareness of the problems noise can cause and the action we can take to reduce them."
Since last year, there has been a 25 per cent increase nationally in complaints about all noise.
The National Society for Clean Air organised National Noise Action Day yesterday to encourage people to live quieter lives.
