CRIMINALS are being invited to talk to the police in a bid to crack their habit, as part of an initiative by a North-East police force.
The scheme, the first of its kind in the region, will focus on the small minority of regular criminals who are responsible for a disproportionate amount of crime, and cause distress for the rest of the law-abiding community.
Northumbria Police has joined forces with North Tyneside Council and the Probation Service under the North Tyneside Safer Community Partnership, to tackle the problem from a new angle, as part of a drive to cut crime in the borough.
Over recent months, a detailed study has highlighted the most prolific offenders.
All those identified will get a letter with an invitation to talk to the police and probation service in a joint interview.
They will be offered support and the chance to take part in an intensive supervision programme.
