MEMORIES of the greatest days in North-East sporting history are to be celebrated in a TV programme.

In 1973, the region came to a halt as Division Two's Sunderland AFC took on the might of Leeds United, then one of the strongest teams in Europe, in the FA Cup Final.

The Wearsiders won the game with a single goal from Ian Porterfield - and that is the last time a North-East team brought a trophy back to the region.

Television bosses want the North-East public to cast their minds back and tell them of any interesting stories from the day of Sunderland's triumph.

Channel 4 is making a programme about the events and has consulted a Tyne Tees documentary made at the time, called Meanwhile Back in Sunderland.

Particularly, they want to contact Ernie and Ann Elliot who became parents at the exact moment Ian Porterfield scored the winner - and named their son Ian in his honour.

They are also looking for a child who was named after every member of the team, and a couple whose wedding at Sunderland Register Office was featured on the programme.

Do you know any of the stars of Meanwhile Back In Sunderland? Were you married on Cup Final Day 1973, or are you named after Ian Porterfield? Contact Northern Echo reporter Chris Webber on (01207) 282719 or The Northern Echo Newsdesk on (01325) 505054.
