THE Three Horseshoes pub had more visitors than usual by lunchtime yesterday.
To be precise 30 extra patrons had crossed the doors of the local in Maiden Law, near Lanchester, County Durham, not for a pint, but to exercise their democratic rights.
Far from the hustings and distinguished only by Home Office photocopied notices and custom-built polling booths, the pub has served as a polling station for 20 years.
Landlord Keith Cordy said: "Voting has gone pretty much the same as last year."
It has not necessarily meant more business, with voters coming and going without taking a drink.
Phil Goddard, who works at the pub, said: "It's the first time I have voted. This is very much on my doorstep - very handy."
