CIVIC leaders have put an appeal out to businesses affected by foot-and-mouth disease - to help them give away cash.
Derwentside District Council has granted business rates relief to two companies affected by the crises, compared to dozens in Teesdale and Wear Valley council areas.
The council's director of regulations and resources, Keith Robinson, has issued an appeal for tourism businesses such as hotels and pubs which have been affected.
The tax relief is funded by the Government. Farms do not pay the business tax and are not affected. In some cases the tax relief is 100 per cent.
Mr Robinson said: "We have had only a handful of applications for relief and yet we know colleagues in neighbouring councils have been inundated with inquiries. We are anxious to see businesses in Derwentside get whatever they are entitled to.
"Each case has to be looked at on its own merits. However it is possible to seek a reduction in the rates payable if it can be shown that hardship has been caused to businesses by the foot and mouth outbreak. It might be also possible to seek a reduction to the rateable value."
