WOULD-BE volunteers took a break from their usual labours yesterday - to take the reins of Tees the shire horse.
The mighty animal was in action hauling logs at the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's Askham Bog nature reserve, near York.
He was providing the equine pulling power for an open day for new and existing volunteers at the reserve.
The trust is trying to attract more volunteers to keep its 80 nature reserves across the county in top condition, and to support the area's rich wildlife heritage.
Development officer Kerry Felber said: "The event is part of National Volunteer Week, and we need more volunteers.
"The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust could not carry out all the work necessary to keep its sites good for wildlife without the help of an army of volunteers.
"At our Askham Bog nature reserve they can help build a new boardwalk which will make public access across this important wetland reserve much easier."
Other tasks carried out by volunteers includes scrub clearance, drystone wall building, and hedge-laying.
