Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club - The second of this Trident sponsored NE Youth Travellers Series was held at DRSC last Friday.
The horrible weather forecast of rain and strong winds kept some competitors away, but even so 24 boats took to the water with visitors coming from Aberdeen and Ripon as well as local clubs.
The first race was sailed in gusty conditions. Danny Boatman and Simon Evans, both in Toppers, demonstrated expert boat management and speed, although they were hard pushed by Tom Dawson and Martin Boatman in a 29er.
Paul Davies in his first year in a Radial, kept ahead of Alistair Conn, also in a Radial. There were many capsizers and retirements, the lighter helms finding the conditions were taxing. Eleven finished.
In the afternoon ODs Athol and Trish King moved the course and made it shorter in an effort to combat the strengthening wind. Thirteen boats managed to get started, but some exceptionally strong gusts flattened many. The 29er was obviously sailing fast and their gybing was quite spectacular. Evans, Conn and Davies chased hard with Harriette Trumble, reefed down, providing strong competition. She was followed by Boatman, Andrew Conn in an Optimist then three Toppers helmed by Jilly Whitehouse, Josh Gebhard and Jdui-Marie Gebhard.
Peter Hobson sailing in his first Open meeting had repeated capsizes and along with others finally retired
The last race was started with a huge cloud bank over the hills in the north west. The 29er soon came ashore. Harriette showed her determination and the way around winning by quite a margin from Davies with Josh, Judi-Marie and Simon being the only other finishers.
