Middlesbrough are expected to unveil Steve McClaren as their new manager on Tuesday.
The Manchester United assistant returned from a family holiday on Friday and Riverside officials hope to tie up his move over the next 48 hours.
McClaren's anticipated appointment comes just a week after the Teessiders parted company with Bryan Robson.
After a rollercoaster seven years in charge, Robson left the club by mutual consent on Tuesday following a disastrous season which almost cost the club dearly.
Chairman Steve Gibson's decision not to cancel a business and holiday trip this Sunday has further fuelled speculation that a deal has already been concluded with McClaren.
Reports in the media have also suggested McClaren will tempt Aston Villa pair Steve Harrison and Paul Barron away from Villa Park as part of a new look coaching team, along with psychologist Bill Beswick.
