A MUSICAL tribute to a political legend will be performed at the Customs House next month.
The courage and determination of firebrand Ellen Wilkinson, MP for Jarrow from 1935 until her death in 1947, is celebrated in the play.
Red Ellen, as she was affectionately known, was one of the first women MPs and, inspired by her Methodist background, became a fiery fighter for traditional socialist beliefs.
She was appointed Minister of Education in the post-war Labour government, the first woman to hold such a high position.
The Story of Ellen Wilkinson and the Town of Jarrow will be performed by St George's Players from July 9-11. Performances begin at 7.30pm and tickets, costing £5 and £3, can be bought on 0191-454 1234.
