FREE safety advice is on offer all this week.
Gateshead Borough Council is hosting an exhibition on fire safety to encourage residents to fit smoke alarms in their homes.
Every year, firefighters are called to 60,000 house fires across the UK, which cause more than 600 deaths and 9,000 injuries. Many of these could be prevented if home were fitted with smoke alarms.
Councillor Malcolm Graham, cabinet member for community safety, said: "I would encourage residents to come along to our exhibition, and particularly to find out more about smoke alarms.
"Alarms detect fires in their earliest stages and this can give precious minutes to help you and your family to get out safely."
Anyone who visits the event will have a chance to win smoke alarms donated by the Fire Brigade and Gateshead council.
The exhibition is taking place at the council's Millennium House, Coatsworth Road from 9.30am to 4.30pm today, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday, it will be open from 9.30am to 12.30pm
