TWO 7ft gateway features at a nature reserve were stolen in an overnight raid.
The entrance to Drinkfield Marsh, in Darlington, had been sculpted from oak by artist Lee Brewster and installed recently, at a cost of about £1,750.
But between 5pm on Monday and 10am on Tuesday, thieves stole the oak pieces either side of a sculpted stile.
"It's unusual by design," said Detective Sergeant Alec Francis, of Darlington police, who said it would be difficult for the thieves to sell the carvings.
Helen Tomb, of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, which looks after the site and commissioned the entrance, said a large wagon or trailer would have been needed to transport the carvings.
Anyone who has any information about the theft is asked to contact police on (01325) 467681, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
