A GIANT sunflower has burst into bloom in Durham Cathedral in aid of a hospice.

The giant sunflower bouquet was created by more than 2,000 children from the Durham City area for St Cuthbert's Hospice.

The project, which is part of the National Hospice Sunflower Appeal, aims to raise awareness of the hospice movement and is just one of the "yellow" events taking place across the country.

St Cuthbert's community fundraiser Michelle Iles said: "We have been doing an event like this for the last three years.

"We have worked closely with about 15 schools and have been in to do a sunflower assembly.

"It raises awareness of the hospice and the hospice movement nationally."

The giant sunflower is just one of the activities planned by St Cuthbert's. This weekend, there will be a 24-hour danceathon in Durham Market Place and a seven-hour piano playing marathon in Pittington.

In July there will be a yellow cycle ride and a yellow quiz.

Anyone who would like to be involved in any of the events should contact St Cuthbert's Hospice, on 0191-386 1170.
