WORK on a new medical centre that will bring together two practices was due to start today.

The chairman of Tees Health Authority, Tony Waites, was on hand to perform a ceremony to mark the start of work on the new Guisborough Medical Centre.

When completed, it will be open to patients from two of the town's surgeries. It will also have a pharmacy and complementary services.

The development, on the site of the former Blackett Hutton Works, on Rectory Lane, will stand close to the town centre, where Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is to relocate offices.

Developer David Rhodes, of Benchmark Properties Ltd, said: "This is an exciting development for Guisborough and will offer modern facilities with adequate parking to the community it will serve.

"The development also opens up a larger area of land for further development as a site that has been derelict for many years and will offer new job opportunities to the local community."
