Shildon Running & AC - Last week was a busy time for Ian Davey who raced over 800m in a British Milers Club event on Wednesday week at Jarrow.
The BMC races are targeted to achieve fast times and Ian certainly did that, knocking over a second off his personal best to record a time of 1.52.10, the fourth fastest for under 20s in the UK this year.
Eighteen-year-old Ian then competed in the Durham County Schools Championships at the same stadium on Saturday, winning the 800m comfortably and gaining the entry standard for the National Schools Championship which takes place in Exeter in July.
Ian, who is coached by his father Peter, has recently been selected to an elite squad of North-East athletes by the UK Athletics Endurance Scheme.
At the County Schools Championships also held at Monkton Stadium, most of the club athletes were competing for their schools on June 9.
Natalie Owens finally won her first championship title with a good victory in the intermediate girls 3000m. After being in second place for most of the race, Owens took the lead with just over one lap to go and pulled away to win in comfortable style.
Matthew Lomax continued his impressive form winning the junior boys 1500m, smashing the club record by six seconds. His time of 4.18 was well inside the qualifying standard for the English Schools Championships at Exeter later this month.
Following the early fast pace, Lomax sat in behind the two leaders until the bell where a devastating burst saw him pull clear of his rivals and open up a substantial lead which was never reduced up to the line.
Several other club athletes gained county vests and ran qualifying times to run at the inter-counties schools held at Carlisle this weekend.
In the junior girls 100m Catherine Turner was second and Annie Readshaw fourth, Gemma Morgan won her first county vest in the inter-girls 200m, the club had a first in the junior boys 100m with Duncan Rogers and Chris Stappard second in the junior boys 200m and John Burns finished seventh in the junior boys 400m.
In the inter-girls 200m Yasmine Meite was first and in the inter-girls 300m Gemma Brown second and Natasha Meite third respectively.
In the inter-boys 200m Tom Carroll was first and in the inter-boys 400m Richard Turner also gained a first. In the senior boys 800m Ian Davey kept up his excellent form winning in fine style with club mates Martin Turnbull third and Stephen Brown fourth and in the senior girls 400m Victoria Finn also kept on strongly to win another county vest.
Finally, in the inter-girls discus Danielle Hodgson won her first county vest with a throw of 27.05m.
