POLICE were last night questioning a man over a hit-and-run accident which left a seven-year-old girl with severe head injuries.
The youngster was hit by a yellow Citroen Saxo car on Colescliffe Road, near the junction with Heathcliff Gardens, in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
The driver failed to stop at the scene of the accident, which happened at 4.20pm on Thursday, but the car was found in nearby woods after a police search.
Officers said drink-driving was not a factor in the accident.
The girl, who has not been named by police, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, where her condition was described as "poorly but stable."
A 30-year-old local man came to Scarborough police station and spoke to investigating officers. He was due to be interviewed again last night.
