AN unusual artist is hoping to become one of the first people in the region to teach people how to sculpt with balloons.

Elaine Shaw, of Hartlepool, has just launched her own business as a balloon decorator providing arrangements for special events.

She sculpts the balloons into a variety of shapes including arches, trees, hearts and clouds and she is hoping to share her expertise with other balloon fans.

Ms Shaw, of Catcote Road, started up her business after her role as a carer for an ill relative ended.

She said: "I went to a wedding where there were arrangements in balloons and thought that was something I could do.

"I've always enjoyed arts and crafts so I thought I would do my own research and see if there was a market out there.

"Balloons have always been a favourite with young and old, but balloon decoration really has come into its won in recent years and they really can transform a room."

Ms Shaw was helped to set up her business, Party Time, by InBiz - a national organisation which started in Teesside and aims to help unemployed people start businesses.

She trained in Peterborough as there were no courses in the area and she is now considering helping others gain the skills to make balloons into art.
