HUNDREDS of young people will attend safety workshops in Gateshead this week to learn how to stay safe at school, at home and at play.

Almost 700 pupils, from nine schools, will be taking part in the week-long safety event, which has been organised by Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council.

The Stop and Think workshops, now in their seventh year, are also being supported by the Tyne and Wear Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Northumbria Police and the Whoops Child Safety Project.

The children, aged nine to 11, will take part in six accident intervention and prevention role playing scenarios

These mimic everyday real life dangers young people might encounter travelling to school, at play and around the home. They use activities that account for the most childhood accidents a year, including swings and playground equipment, road safety, fire danger and water safety
