A TEENAGER is believed to have been trying to rescue his runaway dog when he was struck by a train.
British Transport Police are still investigating the incident, which happened on Sunday afternoon at Whiley Hill, near Darlington.
The 16-year-old, who has not been named, was walking his dog with three friends when the pet ran on to the railway line.
It is understood that the youngster, from the Darlington area, was hit by the Saltburn to Bishop Auckland train as he tried to get his dog off the track.
He suffered a broken left leg and was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital where his condition was described yesterday as comfortable.
Sergeant Mick Turnbull, of the British Transport Police at Darlington, said the teenager had been "very lucky" to escape with his life.
The dog and the other three youngsters were unharmed.
Sgt Turnbull said: "We have still to question him about the incident, but from what we've been led to believe, it would appear the dog ran over the railway line and the lad went after it."
