TWO police officers and a neighbour were hailed as heroes yesterday after rescuing a young mother and her 15-month-old son from a house fire.
The woman, aged 18, and her baby were asleep in their home when the fire broke out just after 4am.
The mother managed to call for help from an upstairs window of her council home in High Garth, Eastfield, Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
A 25-year-old man living nearby forced his way into the house to rescue the child, while police officers Steven Smith and Christopher Pollard went in to lead the woman to safety.
They were all taken to Scarborough District Hospital, with the child initially thought to be seriously ill due to smoke inhalation, but were later released.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service also saved a pet dog from the blaze.
A spokesman said the cause of the fire was an unattended chip pan. The property was fitted with a smoke alarm, but it did not activate because it did not have a battery.
