A SCHOOL is celebrating success in a nationwide mathematics challenge.
Five students from Hurworth School, near Darlington, achieved gold awards in the UK Junior Maths Challenge, run by Leeds University, which was open to year seven to nine pupils.
In the Hurworth team, Daniel Heitman and Thomas Wigham are year seven pupils, while Paul Severs, who was "best in school", Sarah Johnston and Tanya Atkinson, are in year eight.
The school also collected seven silver certificates, which went to Stephen Tremewen, Oliver Welch, James Chapman, David Lewis, Samantha Walker, Tomas Brennan and Calum Tevendale.
Bronze certificates went to 11 pupils.
They were: Laura Dillon, Philip Ward, Robert Liddle, Scott McKone, Ami Walker, Daniel Hayman, Sally Kemble, Hannah Watson, Johanna Richmond, Ian Peacock and Daniel Hiley.
Eamonn Farrer, headteacher of the village secondary school, said: "Two year seven pupils have actually won gold awards, which is absolutely incredible when you think that the competition is run up to year nine.
"We have never had anything like this. It is an amazing achievement.
