The Samaritans in Darlington has launched an appeal for listeners and people to help with fundraising activities.
The group recently held an open day at its centre in Woodland Road to try to attract potential recruits.
The branch now plans to hold another open evening from 7.30pm tonight.
All listening volunteers receive in-depth training before being permitted to man the telephones or meet callers.
An informal interview is followed by a selection process. Volunteers who are accepted undergo training for four weeks.
The Samaritans provide confidential, emotional support to anyone in despair.
Anyone who would like to support the Samaritans' work can contact the branch on (01325) 465465. Volunteers must be over 18.
