CRIME-busters with a nose for police work are urgently wanted by a North-East force.
There is a nationwide shortage of suitable alsations needed by Cleveland Police.
PC Paul Smith, whose dog Blade, a German Shepherd, recently retired, said some dogs' bark was worse than their bite.
"A lot bark and look tough, but they aren't. Most people will immediately stand back at that sign of aggression and the dog thinks it has won," he said.
"Put somebody up against it and there is a different scenario. Most of the dogs will run away."
The four-legged recruits required should be between 12 and 24 months old, with a good temperament and a willingness to learn.
"The hardest part is finding a dog with courage. What we need is a Braveheart.
"We have looked at a series of dogs over the past few months, but we have nothing suitable as yet."
Anyone who can help should phone the force's dog section on (01642) 301802. Reasonable costs will be paid for suitable candidates.
As for Blade, it is living in retirement with an artist on the North York Moors.
