A REVISED application for a three-storey development of the former Watson's garage in Milton Street, Saltburn, into 18 two-bedroom flats, is to be the subject of a site visit by Redcar and Cleveland planning committee.
The building which is within the Saltburn conservation area, is vacant and in a poor state of repair. Consent has been given for demolition.
An original scheme was for the redevelopment of 12 two-bedroom flats and offices on the third floor, and was intended to provide accommodation for the elderly.
The council indicated that the greatest need was for general housing.
Under the revised scheme parking for up to nine vehicles would be provided at the rear access with Amber Street.
The overall design of the building was considered acceptable, but planning officer Mrs Penny Furniss considered the principle area of concern was the effect on the two properties in Marine Parade which were at a lower level.
If the two units closest to Marine Parade were deleted, she would have had no hesitation in recommending approval, but increasing the height along part of the eastern boundary would have a detrimental effect on the amenities of the' adjoining properties. She recommended refusal.
The committee did, however, approve three terrace dwellings on land next to 70 Ruby Street, Saltburn.
