CIU Team Knock Out - Black ball deciders in the fifth frame saw both Spennymoor teams and Hunwick into the second round, while some teams suffered heavy defeats, which must make the Association's Handicap Committee take a look at some of the starts.
Ronnie Bateman proved to be the hero of Spennymoor A when he fought back from a 33 points deficit going into the last frame at home to Crowtrees and potted the final black to take his team to a four points victory. The Crowtrees team had twenty points start but they immediately fell behind when Paul Biddle took the first frame for the Moors by 34 points. However Sonny Hann pulled Crowtrees back into a ten points lead with Keith McLauchlan extending it to 48. Alan Clarke reduced the arrears to 33 with Bateman coming on to clinch victory.
Hunwick had 45 points start when they entertained Meadowfield and were able to extend this when Arnold Fleming won the first frame. However Malcolm Hughes made a massive sixty-four points win in the second to move the visitors level. Trevor Lomax pushed Hunwick into a 33 points lead only to see Stephen Hughes close the gap to 12 points. In the deciding frame Neville Blenkinsop pulled out all the stops to record a 31 win to put Hunwick through. First Division Newton Aycliffe entertained Spennymoor B in a see-saw contest where the visitors had 34 points start. This was doubles after Alan Rowell won the first frame. However Stuart Neil hit top form to level the match by taking the second frame in style for the home side. Micky Anderson restored the Moors lead in the third only to see Michael Hewitt take Aycliffe five points ahead after the fourth. In a nail-biting finale Kurt McCormack managed to take the deciding black to put the Moors through by nine points. Langley Park of the Second Division pulled off a great home win when they beat the visiting First Division side from Stanley Central by 29 points despite giving away nine start. Michael Vicary took the first frame for the Central to push them 39 ahead but from there the home side took over with wins from Stephen Coates, Paul Nord, Kevin Keers and Robert Roche. Thid Division Tow Law entertained First Division Fishburn A with 112 start. The difference in class showed as the visitors took four of the frames with only Charlie Donaghy winning by only five points for the Lawyers. Fishburn's 50 points success was made with wins from John Carter, Brian Quest, Peter Davison and John Griffin. Wheatley Hill B came through their home match against Durham City with a 50 points victory. The Hill had wins from Steve Cave, Dave Blyth and Tony Ellison, while Brian Dunn with a 31 break and Michael Pratt took frames for the City. Brandon took only 17 start into their home game against Wheatley Hill A and slipped 40 behind after Jack Wright took the first frame. Kevin Sample and Graeme Jackson then pulled Brandon back into a 20 point lead but wins from Dennis Clish and Dave Walker took the Hill through. Sacriston's very generous handicap of 97 against the visiting Newhouse A took them through with a 76 points advantage after Mark Brown, Willy Nixon and Gary Barton won frames for them. Ian Dinsdale and Steve Mountain won for the visitors. Fishburn B went down at home to First Division, Shotton Palms when only Winston Hodgson with a 37 break managed a frame for them. The visitors had wins from Barry Hall, John Armstrong with a 30 break, Paul Hickman with a 53 break and Jimmy Evans junior. Derek Potts won his frame by 40 points to add to Crook Belle Vue's 53 start when they entertained Witton Gilbert. However the visitors had big wins from John Rooney senior, John Rooney junior, Willis Joynes and Ian Kerr to take them comfortably through. Reigning champions, Old Shildon showed their power when they visited West Auckland and had wins from Charlie Blake, Frank Nicholson, Billy Goggins, Michael Pratt and Steven Bennett to take them easily through to round two. Leeholme B visited Ferryhill, who had wins from Les Lewis, Bernie Jones, Mark Wilson and Glyn Toas, but when Karl Thompson won his frame by 38 points to add to the visitors 126 start there was no way Ferryhill could close the gap.

South West Durham Association
Bishop Auckland Gents B made their first win in two seasons but it took 60 points start in the Team Handicap for them to manage to beat the visiting Old Shildon. In the first frame Brian Shaw won for Old Shildon to reduce the deficit to 47. However good wins from Martin Jones and Ron Kellett left Old Shildon's last man, Simon Elliott the impossible task of trying to overcome a deficit of almost 100 points. Despite a good win for Elliott the home side went through 261-192.
Results: Darlington Snooker Club A beat Darlington East End; Albert Hill beat Shildon Elm Road; Bishop Auckland Cricket Club beat Harrowgate Hill; Northgate beat Bishop Auckland Gents A; Hopetown beat Darlington Cricket Club; Barnard Castle Folly's had a walk-over against Darlington Snooker Club B. Ferryhill v Barnard Castle Glaxo was postponed.

Summer League
There were only two matches played as teams were involved in the Team Knock Out Cup. In the Second Division, Meadowfield had to thank the three Hughes brothers for their odd point home win over Crook Belle Vue. Craig Hughes put in a 45 break in the first frame for the home side but then Derek Potts and Gordon Sample pushed Crook ahead. Stephen Hughes levelled match and then in the decider, Malcolm Hughes beat Norman Slack. West Auckland went two up at Leeholme B with wins from Kelvin Fletcher and David Geraty.
