A TENNIS clubhouse which was due for demolition has been gutted by fire.
Firefighters were called to Burnopfield Tennis Club, in Lilac Crescent, Burnopfield, near Stanley, County Durham, on Wednesday night.
No one was hurt in the blaze, but most of the building was destroyed in the fire.
It emerged yesterday that the club, recently bought by South Shields-based Lancing Homes, is due to be demolished to make way for a development of 13 terraced and detached homes.
Lancing Homes has applied to Derwentside District Council planning department for permission to demolish the club. Planning officers have recommended to councillors on the development control committee that permission be granted at next Thursday's meeting.
A spokesman for the Durham Aged Mineworkers Home Association, of Chester-le-Street, which ran the club, said: "We are currently assessing the fire damage at the club. We have agreed the sale to Lancing Homes and are still going through that process."
